When I became pregnant, I was so excited for my OB appointments and found myself to be bummed after Every. Single. One.
Why was I bummed? Because I was there for a total of 5 minutes where they checked baby’s heart beat, asked if I had any questions, and then sent me on my way. I wanted an appointment where I got to learn about pregnancy, my baby, and what to expect for birth.
And did I ever get that? Not really… we talked a little about my birth plan in the form of filling out a questionnaire about some of my preferences and that was that.
Some of this definitely has to do with my choice for an OB instead of a certified midwife (that’s a topic for another day) but I also believe this is because there are some serious flaws in the maternal health care system, including lack of education on pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum.
From my own pregnancy journey, to the more I started to work with pregnant mamas, it became evident that there needs to be more education and less fear mongering when it comes to pregnancy and birth.
If I’m not learning about birth, I’m probably talking to someone about it, lol! And in the way of conversations about birth go, its typically a mom asking me questions, talking about how excited she is to meet her baby, how overwhelmed she is, or unfortunately telling me about how the current healthcare system has failed her.
From my own experience as well as working with tons of moms, I wanted to share my knowledge with as many parents as I could so they could reduce fear and anxiety around birth and instead feel prepared, confident, and empowered for their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey.
